OBIT - Villisca Review, September 2, 1909
C. C. Newell died at his home on West Fourth street Tuesday, August 31, 1909. Mr. Newell had been confined to his bed for the past six weeks and for several days death had been expected almost hourly as his lower limbs had gangrened and it was well know that the only relief was death.
Charles Cornelius Newell was born in Bethel, Vermont, Nov. 4, 1846. He was married to Mary Hines at Delavan, Illinois, forty two years ago. The moved from Illinois thirty-eight years ago and located on a farm southwest of Villisca and later moved to a farm five miles west of Villisca where, with his family resided for, about twenty years. Owing to their old age and feeble condition of health Mr. and Mrs. Newell moved to Villisca about, three years ago into the property, where they, since lived, on West Fourth Street. The deceased is survived by a wife and three sons, Levi, William and Joseph. Levi, who lives at McNeely, South Dakota, could not be reached by telegraph, and was not present at the funeral.
C. C. Newell served in the Civil War being enlisted in the 106th Illinois Infantry. He was a member of the G.A.R. Post of Villisca. The funeral services were held from the home Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Shannon, from Stanton. Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. Besides the relatives there were a large number of friends in the community where he had lived who realized the loss of an accommodation neighbor and a trusted friend. All these extended their sympathy to the bereaved ones.
