Evelyn E. Garrett, 94, passed away Monday, March 25, 2013, at Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Evelyn was born February 6, 1919, in Des Moines, to Orville and Marjorie (Grove) Kempka. She married Norman Garrett March 5, 1938. They were married 59 years. She retired from the Des Moines Register in 1970 after many years of service. Evelyn enjoyed singing in the choir, crocheting, playing cards with the great-grandchildren, baking pies, and volunteering at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. She was a member of Centennial Methodist Church in Ivy, Iowa, and the United Methodist Women.

Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Jan (Rex) Adair and Gail (Darrell) Long; grandchildren, Craig (Tammy) Wise and Scott (Heidi) Winslow; step-grandchildren, Tracy (Joni) Long, Tammy (Ron) Myers, and Tarra (Tom) Stewart; 18 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Harold Kempka; and her husband, Norman L. Garrett.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Canfield Cemetery in Ivy, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Centennial Methodist Church.
