Obituary

Death of Mr. Thos. G. Scharf, the Well-Known West Baltimore Businessman

Mr. Thos. G. Scharf, who had been sick for some time with a complication of diseases, died yesterday morning at his residence No. 8 North Fulton Street. Mr. Scharf was a man of remarkable business capacity and energy, and was widely known in the city. He was born in Baltimore January 24, 1816. He was one of five children of William and Susannah Scharf, who originally came from Harford County, where the family had settled two generations before. Thomas G. Scharf's father died when he was only six years of age [note: this would be approx. 1822] and his circumstances were such that he had to begin work at a very early age and teach himself, yet he acquired a fair education and was one of the ablest businessmen in Baltimore.

Mr. Scharf will be buried on Thursday morning next from St. Martin's Church in Bonnie Brae Cemetery [note: now the New Cathedral Cemetery].
