He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 14, 1942 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Teacher and also as Married.

He was the assistant principal at Williamsport School prior to the war.

Irvin died in the "Line Of Duty" when his B-24 crash landed, for unknown reasons, at Keflavik/Meeks Field, Iceland during the war.

In the HM, June 18, 1974, "30 Years AGO"
In June of 1944, he gave his hometown of Williamsport a thrill, when he swooped low over the business district in a B-24 Liberator. "He had promised to show the folks back home the big plane that he pilot's".
