She leaves behind two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph and Barbara Surwilo of Rocky Hill, and Anthony Surwilo of Manchester; three granddaughters and their families, Stephanie Surwilo May and husband, Jonathan May of Farmington, Robin Surwilo, and Lisa Surwilo Dunnery and husband, George Dunnery; and two great grandchildren, Drew and Brooke Dunnery, all of Rocky Hill. She also leaves her siblings, Mike and wife, Eleanor Caranci of South Barre, MA, Evelyn and husband, Dr. Rudy Neri of Hawthorne, NJ, and Geno Caranci of Wheelwright, MA.
She was predeceased by six siblings and their spouses, Cam and Ralph Levine, Josephine and Bennie Knapp, John Caranci, Rose and Roger Belcourt, Margaret Shadbegian, Faye and George Allen and Betty Caranci. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Norma Caranci, Monya Surwilo Czescik, Rose Surwilo, Val Surwilo and Rose Swiatowicz of Stamford; many nieces and nephews, including Monsignor Edward Surwilo and Sister Rose Marie Surwilo; a large and loving family and many friends in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Florida.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the exceptional staff of both The Atrium, a wonderful Alzheimer's care facility, and to The Maple View Manor, both in Rocky Hill, for their care of Mae during her long and difficult battle with her health. She will be greatly missed as a kind and gentle woman, a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend who made a great difference to all the lives she touched.
While she held a number of jobs during her life, starting out at age 14 at the Barre Wool Mill, she was first and foremost a dedicated wife and mother devoted to her family. She and her late husband owned and operated many businesses, including the Maple Lanes and the Mark Twain Bowling Alleys and with their son, Butch, established Mr. Trophy and Co. in Hartford.
Funeral services will be Monday, 9 a.m. from the Giuliano-Sagarino Funeral Home at BROOKLAWN, 511 Brook Street, Rocky Hill, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. James Church, 10 a.m. Interment will be in Center Cemetery, Rocky Hill, Friends may call TODAY, 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Since Mae loved to feed everyone and was famous for her hospitality, please make donations, in lieu of flowers, to the Town of Rocky Hill Human Services Food Bank, 673 Old Main St., Rocky Hill, CT 06067; or to the food bank of your choice in Mae's memory.
