A memorial service honoring L.J.'s life will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Delta United Methodist Church in Delta, Colorado with Dr. Roy Trueblood officiating.
Louis Jacob McCarty, Jr. was born to Louis Jacob, Sr. and Myrtle (Clay) McCarty on July 8, 1919 in Tulia, Texas. He spent his childhood in Texas through the Depression years and then moved to Crawford, Colorado.
On August 29, 1942, L. J. married Eva Violett Starkovich in Hotchkiss, Colorado. L. J. and Eva would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary next month. L.J., together with Eva, did custom farming in Delta County until eventually buying their own land on California Mesa. They spent the next 40 years farming, along with their oldest son, Dwain McCarty.
L.J. earned "Farmer of the Year" recognition in 1956. He was also well known for growing the largest sugar beets in Western Colorado.
After retiring from farming, L.J. opened one of the first snowmobile and motorcycle businesses in Delta, Hilltop Yamaha, Inc. Snowmobiling was one of his greatest passions in life. He knew Grand Mesa like the back of his hand and enjoyed taking anyone who asked on rides at any time, which included Larry Csonka-NFL Hall of Fame, often breaking his own trail across deep powder. The "McCarty Trail" on Grand Mesa was named in his honor.
L. J. was a member of several clubs and organizations including Delta Sno Krusers, Western Colorado Sugar Beet Growers Assn., Thunder Mtn. ATV Club and served on the Co-Op board for several years.
L. J. is survived by his wife, Eva McCarty, of Delta; two sons, Dwain McCarty and his wife, Loretta, and Larry McCarty; and one daughter, Darlene Skutchan and husband, Dwain Bush and Debbie (Spence) McCarty, all of Delta. L. J. is further survived by five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
L. J. was preceded in death by his parents and ten brothers and sisters.
