Journalist. A native of England, he was assigned to Japan in 1861 as a correspondent for the "Illustrated London News." He enjoyed the country so much that he decided to make it his home. He drew many sketches of life in Japan and worked closely with photographer Felice Beato. This duo collaborated on two publications, "Native Types" and "Views of Japan." Wirgman also founded a satirical news journal, the "Japan Punch." He taught his artistic techniques to students that included the renowned Kiyochika Kobayashi and Bunzo Nozaki.
