Monte Jones, 89, of Salem, died Thursday.

He was born in Portland and graduated from Benson Polytechnical High School.

He was a printer and worked in the composing room at the Capital Journal and had drawn political cartoons for the Capital Journal and the Capital Press.

He retired from the Capital Journal in 1972. He enjoyed painting in oils, hunting, fishing, reading and woodworking.

He lived in Ketchikan, Alaska, from 1935 to 1936, then returned to Salem.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine (Jaegler), whom he married in 1934; daughters, Carolyn Sellers of Islamorada, Fla., Eleanor Matteson of Oregon, and Laurel LaBansky of Salem; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mass will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a member. Interment will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Barbara’s Cemetery. Arrangements are by Barrick Funeral Home.
