Though trained as a doctor, low pay brought about a sideline of horse and mule trading. He moved to Clayton, Georgia before his marriage and apparently married and lived there until he entered the Confederate Army.
In a letter to his parents he gave the date of his marriage to Magdalene Bryson as 4 Nov 1853.
He served as a company commander, returning to Cullowhee, Jackson Co, NC, where he is said to have died of milk fever on 29 Sept 1863.
His wife remarried and moved to Texas. They had no children although in letters he spoke of needing to earn a living for his wife and children. It is interesting to note that the sons of Ninian and Mary Ann regularly misspelled their last name when they signed letters, mostly signing Edmonson and Edmondson. This error does not occur in any of the letters written by other members of the family. Rufus is buried in the cemetery in Cullowhee, Jackson co, North Carolina.

Information found at http://www.ncgenweb.us/catawba/military/NCMilOrg/nc-unith.htm Indicates that Rufus was a Captain of Company H, 62nd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry organized 11 July 1862.
