John served his country in the US Navy on the USS Missouri in WWI from 1917 - 1919 and in April 1942 John reentered the US Navy as Carpenter's Mate 2nd class and was assigned to Naval Air Station in Coco Solo, Canal Zone where he served 38 months during WWII. Discharged in Chicago June 1945.

John attended college in Fargo, ND where he earned a degree in Architecture. He worked for the county and served his community as a Minister of the church.
