Graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Alton in 1945, after which he joined the US Navy.

He later received a fleet a fleet appointment to the US Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1950.

He transferred to the US Air Force to become a pilot.

On April 19, 1951, the plane he was piloting crashed near Lubbock Texas and he died while being taken to the hospital by ambulance.
