King, Gilbert (Gibby) Jr.
89, of West Falmouth, MA, passed away on Thursday, March 21. The funeral service will be held at The Church of the Messiah in Woods Hole at 4:30 PM on Tuesday March 26. The committal will be at the National Cemetery in Bourne at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 27. Gilbert was born in Boston on December 2, 1923. He graduated from St. George's, Harvard, and then went on to Harvard Business School where he earned his degree in business after serving in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Harry E. Hubbard during World War II. Gibby enjoyed many years running his own business and sharing his expertise in high vacuum equipment and its application, but his favorite thing was making other people happy, whether it was through teaching them to sail, telling stories, tales and jokes, applauding their new accomplishments, lavishing them with his love of life and ebullient generosity, and digging, opening, and serving them quahogs, (or any other mollusk that could be dug up chased or pried off the rocks). He inspired three generations of friends and family with his love of life. Gibby is survived by his wife Katharine; his children Barbara and husband Paul of Manchester, CT; Rob and wife Moe of Grafton, MA; and Katie and husband Kent of Rockville MD; his grandchildren, Christopher, Caroline and Caleb, and step grandchildren Meghan Lynch, and Josh and Matt Briggs; his brothers Richard King and his wife Reta of West Falmouth, MA and William King and his wife Sheila of Cambridge, MA, and his sister-in-law Betsy King of North Falmouth, MA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gibby is predeceased by his brother Arthur of North Falmouth. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to The Finlay Fund c/o The Chapoquoit Yacht Club P.O. Box 453 West Falmouth, MA 02574.
