Dr. Babler was the chief surgeon at Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis. A graduate of Washington University Medical College in 1902, he practiced all of his professional career in St. Louis. He was a close friend of Dr. Charles Mayo of the Mayo Brothers' Clinic at Rochester, Minnesota. After spending several years at Eastern hospitals studying surgery, her returned to St. Louis and became assistant surgeon under Dr. Harvey Mudd and Dr. Roland Hill. In 1905 he became assistant chief surgeon at Deaconess Hospital under Dr. H. Neidert. In 1910 he established his own private office and had one of the largest private practices in St. Louis.

Well known and respected among his colleagues, it was often rumored that Dr. Babler spent much of his time serving the unfortunate and needy. His brother Jacob wanted to preserve the name and memory of this renowned St. Louis surgeon. Jacob was one of the most influential as well affluent Missourians of the time and strongly advocated the preservation of land for future generations. Jacob's love for his brother and for Missouri scenery came together to create a unique gift to the people of Missouri. He bought a large tract of land on the outskirts of St. Louis with the intention of turning it into a living monument to the many good and kind deeds done by his brother. After the state of Missouri accepted the gift, Jacob and another brother Henry spent more than $350,000 readying the land for the official dedication in 1938.
