Samuel Overton Latimer was the son of Hugh Latimer and Mary Ann Hutcheson. He was born in Ireland and came to America 1851. He enlisted in Company I, 44th Regiment Alabama Infantry in 1863 at the age of 17, joining his father Hugh, and brother Arthur. In 1865, at the age of 19, Samuel married Mary Holland Pitts Silvey of Carrol County, Georgia. Mary was the daughter of Elihu Pitts and was the young widow of William Drewry Silvey who died in a hospital in Virginia in 1863. Samuel and Mary lived in Newnan, Coweta County, Georgia, where they had five children before Mary's early death in the mid 1870s.

In 1874, Samuel moved to Robertson County, Texas with his four sons, Arthur James, Robert Edward, Park W., and Samuel Oliver. His daughter Mary Ella remained in Georgia where she married William J. Murphey in 1897. By 1900, Samuel Overton Latimer was living alone in Presidio County in West Texas. In 1900, his sons were living in Forney, Kaufman County, Texas. In 1908, Samuel moved into the Confederate Home in Austin, Texas, where he remained until his death in 1918.
