Edward J. Phelps September 27, 1931 January 5, 2011 Edward J. Phelps, 79, of Racine, Wisconsin, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at his home. He was born on September, 27, 1931 to George and Frieda (nee: Baehr) Phelps in Menominee, MI. Ed spent his childhood in Marinette, WI, and was a 1949 graduate of Marinette High School. Ed went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at DePaul University in Chicago, graduating in 1954. He served in the United States Army Counter Intelligence Corps, stationed in Stuttgart, Germany at the 66th CIC Headquarters from 1954-56. For most of his professional career, he worked for Equitable Life Insurance Company of New York, as a sales representative and manager in Racine. On August 23, 1958, he was united in marriage to Donna Gabbey in Racine, WI. Ed was the recipient of many scholastic and professional awards and honors throughout his career, and active in many clubs and organizations, including the Menomonee, MI Legion Post; Sierra Club, Racine; Milwaukee and Racine Jaycees; Racine and Kenosha Life Underwriters Association; and Chairman, United Executives Fund, 1966 Pilot Campaign. Upon retirement, Ed enjoyed a seasonal residence at Hayward Bay, MI; travel and educational opportunities; his passion for World War II history; and time with family, friends, and especially his grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by his brother, Bernard C. Phelps, of Green Bay, WI. Surviving is his sister, Mary Glyzewski, of Batavia, IL; his three daughters and two sons, Mary Ann Phelps Churchill (Phillip Churchill) of Palm Harbor, FL, Christine Phelps Tobin (Kevin Tobin) of Oakwood Hills, IL; Maureen, Eddie and John Phelps of Racine; 4 grandchildren, Cameron and Connor Churchill, Megan and Patrick Tobin; and two step-grandchildren, Ryan and Sean Tobin; cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends. Friends may call at Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home, Marinette, on Sunday, January 9, 2011, from 12 noon until 3:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 10th, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Church, Carney Blvd, Marinette, by the Reverend Joseph Dorner. Burial will follow immediately at Forest Home Cemetery.
