Aged 72 years [This first line was part of the original memorial created by Debbie J., so it may be from her reading of the tombstone she photographed. Because the 1795 date of birth is agreed upon by several sources, 1867 was chosen as the date of death for this memorial based on the fact that it would make him age 71-72 at the time of his death, and it's not far off from the 1863 or 1865 dates of death suggested in the Zartman genealogy.]

=====

DISCREPANCY re spelling of surname: This memorial was created with the Zortman spelling, probably based on creator Debbie's reading of the tombstone she photographed. The Zartman genealogy, however, suggests that John Henry used the "Zartman" spelling and that it was his children, not himself, who began using the Zortman spelling. [F.A.G. rules preclude using "Zartman/Zortman" at the top of the memorial.]

Buried at Greenbrier Farm, 4 or 5 miles from West Union in Jefferson Twp, Adams County, Ohio (not, as of 7-16-2019, a formal cemetery recognized by F.A.G.). This is not a "burial unknown"; we know where he is buried, but the farm is not listed as a cemetery on F.A.G. as of 7/16/2019.

He died in 1863 or 1865. On this F.A.G. memorial, 1863 is an estimated date. More exact information would be welcome.

Quoted from the Zartman genealogy (available on Google Books), page 181, from the "certificate of birth and baptism" of John Henry Zartman:

"To the husband and wife, Michael Zartman and his wedded wife, Catharine Frederica, nee Emerich, a son, John Henry, was born in the year of our Lord Jesus 1795, on the 21st of December, at 6 o'clock in the morning, in the constellation of Capricorn. . . . This John Henry was born and baptized in America in the State of Pennsylvania, in Northumberland Co., in Mahanoy township. . . ."

Alternative spelling of the surname: Zortman. John Henry used the Zartman spelling; his children began using the Zortman spelling.

==========

The following is from the Zartman genealogy (1905):

John Henry Zartman and Family [page 181 of the genealogy]

John Henry Zartman, son of Michael, son of Henry, son of Jacob, son of Alexander I, was born in Northumberland Co., Pa. His certificate of birth and baptism, 114 years old, was found in the possession of a grandson, John Henry Hornbeck, of Los Angeles, Calif. Mr. Hornbeck kindly sent us this certificate, and from it we copy the following: "To the husband and wife, Michael Zartman and his wedded wife, Catharine Fredericka, nee Emerich, a so, John Henry, was born in the year of our Lord Jesus 1795, on the 21st of December, at 6 o'clock in the morning, in the constellation of Capricorn. God give grace, power and strength, that this John Henry may grow up in the fear of the strength, that this John Henry may grow up in the fear of the praise and honor of the Lord. Baptized by Pastor Geiseweit, preacher and servant of the Word. This John Henry was born and baptized in America, in the State of Pennsylvania, in Notherumberland Co, in Mahanoy township. Witness of baptism: John Henry Zartman, unmarried." This sponsor was an uncle of baby John Henry, and in the year 1811 moved to Perry Co., O.

John Henry was four years of age when his father, Michael, died, in 1799; some time thereafter, and before 1803 Michael's widow married Daniel Cobel, and they moved to Franklin township, Allegheny County, Pa. John Henry and his brother Michael, Jun., as young lads were taken along into Allegheny Co. Michael, when a young man, returned to his native place; but it does not appear that John Henry ever came back, not even on a visit; therefore he and his faily became wholly separated, isolated from all the rest of the Zartman relationship; they became a lost tribe; but the historial providentially found this large and interesting clan, and its members scattered from Pennsylvania to the Pacific Coast. John Henry was a carpenter by trade. He married a woman named Margaret Shaffer, nicknamed "Peggy." They moved into Butler Co, Pa., and there were born to them all of their eight children, as follows: 1. A boy whose name is thought to have beenMichael; this boy on his way to school one spring morning fell into a stream of water, called "Breaknec," and drowned. 2. Mary Ann, b. 1818. 3. William, b. Jan. 17, 1819. 4. Isaac, b. Nov. 25, 1820. 5. John. 6. Catharine Ann, b. Dec. 8, 1824. 7. George, b. May 18, 1826. 8. James.

John Henry was not contented in Butler Co., and therefore he decided to go father west. He and his wife and their children, except Mary Ann and William, took a boat at or near Pittsburgh, and sailed down the Ohio river in quest of a new home. This was in the year 1841. They located in Adams Co., Ohio, near Rome and West Union. John Henry used to say he had only fifty cents left when they reached their destination. There in Adams Co., Jefferson township, he bought a small farm and named it "Greenbrier." The place bears the same name still. There he engaged in farming, worked some at his trade, and also conducted a general country store. e was evidently a thrifty, industrious and prosperous man. Either in 1865 or 1868 he died and is buried on the "Greenbrier" farm [this is contradicted by his having been identified in Zortman Cemetery in Lynx, nearby, also in Adams County]; his wife, Margaret, died some years later and is buried by his side. Henry Scott, the administrator of John Henry's estate, is still living,and gave us much valuable information; he writes--"I am now 70 years old. I knew John Henry Zartman from my boyhood. He came from Pa."
