DODSON, RALEIGH was born 6 Feb 1807, probably in Va., & moved to Maury Co., Tenn. with many family members & neighbors soon after his birth. He was the son of David & Frances Fitzgerald Dodson.

On 30 Aug 1831 he married Miss Sarah A Witherspoon and they became parents of David W., Beverly A, Mary Lou and several infants who died early. In 1841, Sarah died perhaps as a result of the birth of twin babies, both of whom also died.

A few months later, on 3 Nov 1841, Raleigh married Lucinda Witherspoon, sister of his first wife. Their children included: Frances P., who died young, and Raleigh P., later a prominent citizen in Columbia. It is interesting that the father died on the day that this last son was born: 6 Sep 1844.

This is one of the most difficult cemeteries in the county to find. Mr. Hawkins, author of "Maury County Tennessee Cemeteries", pg. 153; 1986.

Mary -
I have a questionnaire by former Confederate soldiers answered by your Raleigh P. Dodson in April , 1922. He was then 77 years old.

He thought his family came from N.Carolina. They owned twenty slaves. He confirmed the data you posted. They lived at Santa Fe in Maury County. He thought his father had died in 1845. He said the Witherspoon wives were daughters of David (born N.Carolina. 1789, died 1876) and Penelope (Gill) Witherspoon, also from N.Carolina

He enlisted in Spring of 1861 in Company D of the 1st Tenn Inf commaned by Col. George Maney and later by Col. Hume Feild. (he spelled it "Field" but it actually was "Feild")
He was at Cheat Mountain, Shiloh and was wounded in the right forearm and shoulder at Perryville, KY 8 Oct 1862. This disabled him for further service.

Post-war he was in the livery, hotel and hardware business up to his retirement in 1895.

His father came to Maury with his fasther as a small boy which would be like ca 1810-1815.

I note that in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1790-1792, three Dodsons, including David, married Fitzgeralds.
