Cannon Beach school principal, 93 James Byron Adams, 93, of Portland, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, in Portland.

Mr. Adams was born April 21, 1910, in Scappoose, to Joseph and Elizabeth Landgrave Adams.

In 1962, he married Frances N. McClure. She survives, residing in Portland.

Mr. Adams graduated from Oregon Normal School (now Western Oregon University) and Oregon State University. He did graduate work at Reed College and served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in the Pacific during World War II. He taught for many years in Portland Public Schools at elementary and high school levels. He taught drama at Washington High School and Girls Polytechnic and was an active supporter of the Rose Festival princesses. At the elementary level, he worked with the Model School Program during the 1960s. During the 1950s and 1960s, he was active with the Portland Civic Theater and Portland Players. In 1968, he moved to Cannon Beach where he was principal of Cannon Beach School. In 1987, he moved to Terwilliger Plaza, Portland.

Family members say he had many talents including actor, gourmet chef, restaurateur, hairdresser, most eligible bachelor, educator, writer and grandfather. He continued acting and gave performances of Aldyth Morris' "Damien" in support of church and community fund-raisers during the 1990s.

In addition to his wife of 41 years, he is survived by two stepchildren, Mary Ann Bell of Honolulu and Donald McClure of Providence, R.I.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial service is 4 p.m. Thursday at Terwilliger Plaza auditorium in Portland.
