In 1850 he and his parents and seven siblings lived on a farm in Pike Township, Coshocton County, OH. His father owned real property worth $2500.

In 1860 he and his parents and five siblings lived there. His father owned real property worth $4200 and personal property valued at $825.

John enlisted at the age of 19, on December 8, 1861, at Camp Meigs, near Dover, Ohio, in Company F, 80th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted for a term of three years, but was discharged as a private on surgeon's disability on January 3, 1862, before the regiment left for the field. He married Susan J. Cochran in Coshocton county, Ohio, on July 19, 1866.

In 1870 he and his wife and their daughter lived on a farm in Pike Township, Coshocton County, OH. He owned personal property worth $100.

In 1900 he lived with his daughter and her husband and their three children in a place they were renting in Newark, OH. He and his son-in-law both worked as laborers. He married Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Sams in Coshocton County on March 18, 1901.

In 1910 he and Elizabeth and his grandson Merritt Ashcraft lived back in Pike Township. He worked as a laborer doing odd jobs. Betty died in Coshocton on Mar 25, 1922, after which time John moved to Columbus to stay with his grandsons.

In 1930 he lived with grandsons Ross and Merritt Ashcraft in a place they were renting for $25 a month at 487 Third Avenue (East or West not indexed, but West seems more likely) in Columbus, OH. They did not have a radio. His grandsons both worked as moulders, making mining equipment.
