Born on June 7, 1870 on his father's farm in Catoctin District of Frederick County, Maryland. He learned carpentry but at his father's death, took over management of the family farm for the next three years. He then bought a ninety-acre farm in Hauver's District in 1902, on which he built a three-story home containing ten rooms, a bank barn, and other farm buildings. He was married May 19, 1896 at Thurmont, Maryland, to Susan Dorothy Harbaugh, born February 27, 1874, daughter of Hamilton Harbaugh and Cornelia Ann Elizabeth Pryor, among the earliest and most prominent families in Harbaugh Valley."
