William E. Mitten was the second child of Amos and Susan Short Mitten.

July 31, 1895 William married Mary Bates Johnson, widow of Eli Johnson. They were married by Justice of the Peace Edward Kramer and resided in Clinton Co., Indiana

William, a laborer in a brickyard, and Mary had three children, Beatrice (Mrs. Beryl Davis), Georgia and Ellsworth, in addition to Mary's children Ella, Cecil and Alma Johnton.

DEATHS
William Mitten

William Mitten, a well known resident of Rossville, died at his parents' home there last night from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy suffered a few days ago. He was past 51 years old. His condition had been feeble since last May since which time he had been suffering with complications following the stroke of apoplexy he grew rapidly weaker until the demise at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.
He is survived by his widow and three children: Beatrice and Catherine residing at Elwood, and Elsworth Mitten of Ross Township. Both parents survive, also a brother, George Mitten of Mulberry and four sisters, Mrs. Dennis Kreisher, of Kirklin; Mrs. James R. Crouse and Mrs. Edward Smith of Rossville, and Mrs. Pratt Haun of Indianapolis.
Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed.

William Mitten Died Last Night After Lingering Illness
Following an illness dating back to last May, when he suffered a stroke of apoplexy, William Mitten, a well known resident of Rossville, died last night at the home of his parents in that place.
Following the stroke of apoplexy, Mr. Mitten, who was fifty-one years of age, never recovered and as his condition grew weaker his mind became affected and for the past week his condition had been critical, resulting in his death at 8:45 o'clock last night.
He leaves a widow, two daughters, Beatrice and Catherine, of Elwood; one son, Elsworth, of Ross Township. He is also survived by his parents, one brother, George Mitten of Mulberry, and by four sisters, Mrs. Dennis Kreisher or Kirklin, Mrs. James R. Crouse and Mrs. Edward Smith of Rossville, and Mrs. Pratt Haun, of Indianapolis."
