Royal J. Laird was the son of Stephen Laird and Hannah Brink. The Brinks and the Lairds both seemed to be of the "horsey set," since a few of the Brinks were in the Calvary during the "Great Rebellion," and the Laird family had a livery in Forestdale, a hamlet to the west of Brandon Gap.

Royal was married to Sarah Almeda Kinsman. After he died, Sarah married Milton Thomas Crossman. They are all buried in the West Hill Cemetery.

Daughter: Nellie I (according to GENEALOGICAL RECORD OF THE DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT KINSMAN, OF IPSWICH, MASS.) but birth record calls her Ella Jane Laird, born August 9, 1859.

Nellie Jane married Samuel Wesley Swan on December 25, 1878.
