Civil War veteran of 10th Ky Infantry (Union) Company H, was captured at Battle of Courtland Bridge, Alabama and sent to Richmond Va's Libby Prison, later exchanged and returned to unit. Served with future father-in-law, John Raley as well as his brothers (George and John A. Murphy). All his children bore his wife's maiden name "Raley" (legally married later). Wife was Mary Elizabeth Raley.

(George is buried at Bethel Union; John Murphy's burial site unknown)

Son of James Kennelum "Kelly" Murphy and Catherine "Arena" Bowles. James was a Mexican War veteran.

As of May 2013, grave is possibly unmarked and plot location is being investigated (with some difficulty) with goal of adding veteran's marker if plot determined.
