Ernest D. Payne
BORN: October 1, 1934
DIED: March 23, 2013
LOCATION: Clinton, Tennessee

Ernest D. Payne, 78, changed his address from Cold Water Farm, Clinton, Tennessee to heaven on March 23, 2013.
Ernest was affectionately known as "Pop" to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Pop was a retired elementary school teacher and principal. He taught for 40 years beginning in a one-room school in Maple Creek, Kentucky at the age of 17, and continued his career in Ohio and Florida and many years in Anderson County, Tennessee at schools including Rosedale, Shinliver, Marlow, Medford, South Clinton, Norwood, and Dutch Valley. He was retired from the Tennessee National Guard after 26 years at the rank of Master Sargent.

Pop was born October 1, 1934 in Maxie, Kentucky at the head of Kensee Hollow. He was the oldest son of Carson and Fannie Perkins Payne and the grandson of W.M. "Squire Bill" Perkins.

He was preceded in death by grandson, Marcus Cole Payne, infant brother Johnny Hugh Payne, and parents.

He is survived by wife of 59 years and faithful caregiver, Laura Graham Payne, sons, Steve (Jana), Mark (Martha), grandchildren Brandon (Gretchen), Casey (fiancé Carrie), Cody (Britney) Thomas, Kolby, Kaylee, great grandchildren Jack and Nora, brothers William Alfred (Rachel), George Frank (Emmalee), Junior Carson, and sisters Dolly Williams, Selma Herron, Nannie Sue Davis (J.L.) and many nieces and nephews.
Pop loved his rural lifestyle and enjoyed gardening and farming, but his true passion was his wife, sons, and grandchildren. Grieve not for Pop because he can walk again and his big heart, broken in 2004 when his grandson Marcus lost his life, is now healed. Our loss is great, but our joy is greater knowing that his pain is over and his life in heaven has begun. It would be great to hear him say just one more time, "Man, ain't this living!"
The family suggest memorial contributions be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Make- A- Wish Foundation.
The family will receive friends Monday, March 25th from 6-8PM at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. Graveside service will be Tuesday, March 26th at 11:00AM at Grandview Memorial Gardens with Pastor Kenny Gillium officiating. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. www.holleygamblefh.com
