Thomas MCDOWALL, born in Wigtownshire, Galloway, North Britain (now Scotland); baptised in June 1793 in Inch Parish, Wigtownshire. The son of John MCDOWAL and Ann BEGGS. Immigrated to the USA in 1811, and served as as a merchant's clerk in Savannah, GA., by 1812. Settled in Augusta, GA., where he married Anna REID, daughter of David REID, Sr., and Elizabeth MOORE REID, on December 30, 1818, in Richmond Co., GA. A successful businessman in Augusta, he served as: an Incorporator of the Augusta Free School in 1821; Treasurer of the Augusta Auxilliary Bible Society in 1823; a 'Trustee of the Cemetery of the Village of Summerville' in 1824 & an officer in the Presbyterian Church. He was in partnership with his brother-in-law, Robert Alexander REID, operating McDOWALL and REID, a dry goods establishment. McDowall died at Salt Sulphur Springs, Virginia (now in Monroe Co., West Virginia) on 9 July 1825. His remains were interred at Summerville Cemetery in October 1826. McDowall was survived by his wife and three children.
