Amos was one of two sons of Robert and Hannah (Holt) Crossman, who were living in Pittsfield Vermont. Amos Holt Crossman was the younger brother by five years. On January 17, 1841, he married Polly B Wheat, who was born in Vermont September 24, 1817. They were both living in Pittsfield 1850, where Amos worked as a laborer. The couple moved to West Rochester sometime between then and 1860.

The Crossman farm, located near Joshua Whitney's farm, burned down in 1899, and Milton died the next day of pneumonia.
