Inventor. Born in France, he was the art director for the New York Herald newspaper when he developed a process of engraving photo plates. The company described the idea as idiotic, so he went to the rival newspaper company the Daily Graphic which the first to debut his half-tone printing process for the printed reproduction of photographs in news print in 1880.
