Mother: Rebecca (Nichols) Whitney
Spouse: Sarah Ann (Kinsman) Whitney

Joshua Whitney enlisted in the 11th Regiment, VVI, August 26, 1864 and was discharged for disabilities May 16, 1865. He was a second generation farmer on West Hill, inheriting the farm from his father Oliver. Joshua's son Sidney kept the farm running into the early 20th century, He married Sarah Ann Kinsman, also descended from a first generation, early settler of West Hill, Moses Kinsman. Joshua and Sarah Whitney had the following children: Erastus (1839-1841); Robert B. (1841-1870); John O. (1844-1862); Ida Jenett (1846-1884); Ellen (1852-?); Sarah Ann (1854-1878); Cyrus (1855-?); and Mary Elizabeth (1857-1878).

Joshua had two sons in the Civil War, and lost one (John O.) to disease. Joshua must have lied about his age, since he was 51 when he enlisted as a private, though the maximum age was 44. In his later years, he was declared legally insane by Dr. Huntington, of Rochester.
