Dudley owned and operated a drug store and a confectionary shop in McKinney, Texas while his father Sterling Coffey ran the town livery stable. Dudley was also a life insurance agent in Dallas and Waco. His brothers were Fred S. and Lurien P. Coffey. His sisters were Mary F. and Hallie Coffey.

In 1818 during WWI at age 29, Dudley enlisted in the U.S. Army at McKinney. He served with the 508 Aero Squadron Air Service at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and at Gerstner Field, Louisiana. Dudley was a member of the McKinney Masonic Lodge and a volunteer fireman for the McKinney Fire Department.
