WILLIAM H. ELLIOTT
Age 89, passed away peacefully at Compassionate Care Hospice on Monday February 4th, 2013.
Bill proudly served his country during WWII as a member of the United States Marine Corps. As a Wilmington Police Officer, Bill rose to the position of Commanding Officer of the Traffic Division.
He recommended and helped design the red and white parking enforcement signs that are still in use in the City of Wilmington. He was also directly involved in implementing the Credit Union in the Wilmington Police Department.
Bill was awarded a Fellowship at Northwestern University and instructed police officers in the use of the Breathalyzer. He also taught at the University of Maryland. An outstanding marksman, he participated in frequent programs demonstrating his shooting skills with other members of the Department.
After retiring from the Wilmington Police Department, Bill led a life of varied careers. Executive Director of the Delaware Chapter of the March of Dimes, instituting their first Walkathon, which is still in existence today, State Steward for the Delaware Harness Racing Commission and Labor Law Enforcement Officer for the Delaware Department of Labor until his retirement in 1985.
Bill was a well known personality and participant at the Pleasant Hills Bowling Lanes. He was a member of the Senior League. He was a life-long devoted and dedicated John Wayne fan.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine M. Elliott; his daughters, Sharyn Lawhorne (C.W), Maureen Davis (Charles), Darlynn Knight and Robyn Elliott. Also left to cherish his memory are 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington on Saturday February 9th from 8:30 am to 10:00 am. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10:30 am at the Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington, DE 19810. Burial will be private.
