He was born in 1916 in Madison and was a son of the late Henry L. Alger and Ollie S. Alger.
Mr. Alger was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army, achieving the rank of PFC. He was employed by Parks and Recreation as a maintenance worker.
His wife, Gladys Naomi Alger, died on April 29, 2002.
He is survived by a son, Nelson Lee Alger of Luray; a brother, Paul Alger of Corpus Christi, Texas; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Carol Alger; a son, James Abraham Alger Jr.; and 14 siblings.
A funeral service was conducted on Monday, March 18, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Burial with military honors was in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County.

He first married Helen Irene Thomas, a daughter of Hubert Lloyd and Sigourney Florence [Stroop] Thomas, on 1 Jul 1939. They were divorced on 23 Dec 1974 after being separated for over 30 years. From that marriage one son, James Abraham Alger Jr., was born on 8 Jan 1940 and died on 22 Jan 1996.
Gladys Naomi Miller was born 15 May 1926 in Winchester, Winchester City, WV, to James Albert and Hattie J. [Haines] Miller. She first married Charles William Dinges, a son of Benjamin Franklin Dinges and Eva Luvenia [Beddow] Dinges, on 21 Dec 1943. Charles was twice divorced prior to his marriage to Gladys. He passed away on 29 Jan 1974 at Loudoun Memorial Hospital in Leesburg, Loudoun Co., VA, leaving Gladys a widow.
James Sr. and Gladys were married on 30 Dec 1974. Gladys died in Augusta, Hampshire, WV, on 26 Apr 2002. James died at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., WV, on 11 Mar 2013.
