Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Mary Clark Brown, former Waverly resident, who died May 25 at the home of her son, Rev.Edward T. Brown, pastor of St. Clement's Episcopal church, Honolulu, Hawaii. She had been in ill health for several years, dying peacefully after a week's severe illness. News of her death came by air mail and arrived Thursday morning, May 29, and would have appeared in last week's Journal had it not been for going to press early on account of the Memorial Day holiday.
Mrs. Brown was the widow of the late William Woodford Brown, cashier of the Bank of Waverly whose place of business was the present location of the Mader barber shop. She was born in East Poultney, Vermont, March 3, 1850, a daughter of Dr. Oliver and Caroline Hopson. She is the final member of their family of eight. On August 2, 1877, she was married to Mr. Brown. Besides her husband, who died May 14, 1889, she was also preceded in death by one daughter, Cornelia, who was born March 6, 1881, and died March 10, 1890. She is survived by her son, Rev. Edward T. Brown. Mrs. Frances Nevius, of this city is a niece.
Mrs. Brown left Waverly in 1912 to reside with her son in the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, San Francisco, California, where she was "Mother" Brown to all the students. When her son became pastor of the church in San Jose, California, in 1914, she went there to reside with him and continued to make San Jose her home until going to Honolulu in 1935, residing there with her son since that time.
Funeral services were held in St. Clement's church. The body was cremated and the ashes will be sent here for interment in the family lot in East cemetery.
