Daughter of Sgt. James Whitaker Ingle and Erie Jane Sampson Ingle. She was orphaned at a young age as her father was killed in the Civil War and her mother died of disease only four years later. In 1866, a court appointed guardian for her and her minor sister was J. S. Hare (Jonathan Spangler Hare), husband of their mother's sister, Harriet McMullen Sampson Hare. He filed Civil War minor child pension papers right after her mother's death.
