Stephen (Steve) Maxwell, 82 of Gatesville, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2005.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 25, at the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Kurt Fuessel officiating. Burial was in the Davidson Cemetery.
Steve was born on July 25, 1922, to James and Essie Keener Maxwell. His father, James came to Texas in 1889 at the age of 13 from Glasgow, Scotland. He was one of eleven children raised on the Maxwell farm on Caulfield Mountain. Steve's grandfather was a pastor; his strong faith was passed on to his grandson. Steve was baptized in the Mountain Baptist Church at the same time as his young son, Ronnie. He attended Blackfoot and Fort Gates Schools. After finishing his schooling, he assisted his father in the operation of the family farm until 1942. Steve and Willie "Bill" Sharp were married by his grandfather, Pastor Keener on October 13, 1942. Steve's mother stood for them. They shared 62 happy years together. Their only time apart was when Steve was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He was trained with the 84th Infantry Division, 309 Engineer Combat Battalion. He served with this unit in the European Theater of Operations. For his service in Europe, Steve was awarded the European Service Campaign Ribbon with five battle stars for participation in five separate major battles. Steve was discharged in December 1945. Steve was employed in the Supply Division at Fort Hood. He retired from this employment in 1978. This did not mean that he quit working, however. Steve was always known for hard work and good judgment. He prided himself on being conservative and very thrifty with money. These qualities made him perfect for his next career. He worked for 20 years with his son, Daryl at CSS. He did job bidding and hot shot deliveries of materials. Steve was a member of the Gatesville Masonic Lodge # 197A.F. and A.M. for 33 years. He served as Master of the Lodge in 1964-65. Steve was also a member of the Sheriff's Posse for many years. All of Steve's children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren enjoyed the benefit of his humor and loving nature. Steve was a devoted husband. As a couple, they enjoyed many activities together. Visiting with family and friends and dancing were things that Steve really loved. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Oliver and Milton; sisters, Inez, Annie, Ray, Stella May and Nettie; and a grandson, Ronald Stephen Maxwell, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Willie (Bill) Maxwell of Gatesville; and their four children, Barbara Roach of Arlington, Ronnie Maxwell and wife Sara of Gatesville, Carolyn Sims and husband Babe of Weatherford, and Daryl Maxwell and wife Debbie of Gatesville; grandchildren, Andrea Roach Marshall and husband Jerry, John Paul Sims and wife Shannon, Brandon Roach and wife Anne, Misti Maxwell Morra and husband Kevin, Stacia Sims, Michael Maxwell and fiancé Emily, Lori Maxwell McLaughlin and husband Brent, Kyle Maxwell; great grandchildren, Lundyn Marshall, Chase Marshall, Maxwell Marshall, Braden Maxwell Sims, Brice Sims, Carley Sims, Garrett Jones, Quinlan Jones, Camden Morra, McKenna McLaughlin; brothers, Cliff and W.B. (Dub); and a sister, Ida Bell Weems.
