Funeral Services will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 23, 2013 at South-side Baptist Church with interment at Florence Memorial Gardens, directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 noon until just prior to the service. Surviving are his loving wife of 42 years Edna Mae Kinsey Dudley Hill, his son David (Ann) Hill of Pageland and daughter Nancy Hill (Dwight) Langston of Florence, step sons, Franklin and Wayne (Roseanna) Dudley of Darlington. He has five grandchildren, three step grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three step great-grandchildren, and special sister in-law Teenie Hill Carroway, as well as many nieces and nephews all of whom he adored. James was born in Abbeville, GA, May 21, 1923, the fourth child of Jesse Raymond and Ola Atkinson Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alfred, Randolph, Billy, and Ray; sisters, Bertie Hill, Malissa Streett, Sue Evans, and Jennie Evans; and his youngest son James David Hill, Jr. (Jimbo). Mr. Hill was a member of Southside Baptist Church for 30 years serving faithfully as an usher and a member of the Pioneers Sunday School Class. Known as the church and community "Handyman", he took great pride in his carpentry skills as he was always willing to fix, replace, or repair anything at church or for family and friends. He loved his family and church family very deeply. He wanted to mention those who faithfully visited him following his stroke including Bonnie Thornton, Clyde Turner, Joe Rhoden, Marion and Jack Jackson, Bobby and Betty Sarvis, and many others. Mr. Hill was a WWII veteran serving his country in the Pacific Theater. Early in life Mr. Hill was employed by Pete Thornell, on one occasion he and Mr. Thornell drove to Rock Hill where he drove a converted school bus back to Florence for Mr. Thornell's public transit company and worked the route for a week until a permanent driver was hired. He was later employed by Florence Manufacturing, Wicks, and Builderway of Florence. He had a keen memory as he loved to tell funny stories about "The Good Ole Days". The family would like to thank the staff of the sixth and eighth floors at Carolinas Hospital, Florence Rehab and Nursing, and Honorage Nursing Center for the love and tender care he was given as a patient and resident at theses facilities.
