∼Son of Andrew Figg and his first wife, Catherine Holmes. William enlisted in Company F, 16th Illinois Infantry in 1861, along with his brother Robert. Both listed that they were born in Nelson county, Kentucky on their muster roll entries.
William never married. In the 1900 census, he was living with William T. M. Figg, and his wife, Susan D. Thomas Figg in Chicago, with his relationship given as "uncle". It remains to be seen if he was the uncle of William T. M. Figg, but he was definitely the uncle of Susan D. Thomas Figg; he was a brother of Susan's mother, Sarah Figg Thomas. William was also listed as living alone in Red Oak, Iowa during the 1900 census, but his date of birth given there was incorrect, probably given by a third party in his absence.
Iowa death records and newspaper accounts state that William died in Red Oak and was buried there, but the location of his burial is still in question. He was survived only by 8 nieces and nephews. He may not have received the military marker he was entitled to, as he is not listed in WPA burial records.
