Nancy Smith Dudley was an 19th Century frontier homemaker. Nancy was born 11 Feb 1825 in Falls Mills, Tazewell Co., Virginia the daughter of William Parham Dudley and Mary Stevens Deatherage. Her parents had just moved to the area from their birthplace near Mt Airy, Surry, North Carolina. She was named after her maternal grandmother Nancy Smith. Little is known about her childhood on the Virginia frontier. Her father was an illiterate farmer but apparently
she attended school and was able to read and rite. At age 20, Nancy met a traveling tailor by the name of Pleasant Meade Sturdivant about 1845. They soon married and eventually raised 8 of 11 children to adulthood. All were born near Snowville, Pulaski County, Virginia where they settled a year after they wed. An associate of Pleasant Meade ran a busy woolen mill that attracted business far and wide.
Some of their children worked as farm laborers to supplement the family income. After Pleasant's death in 1822, Nancy and the children moved back to Falls Mills, Tazewell Co., to be near her family. Nancy died May 20, 1904 and is buried in the Old Dudley Cemetery in Falls Mills near her parents.
