Mrs. Winifred "Winnie" Helen King Massey, 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by family members and a close friend at The Hospice House in Waycross on Wednesday evening, March 20, 2013.

"Miss Winnie" was born in Kingsland, Georgia, on June 29, 1917 to the late Warren Chester King and Bessie Floyd King, who died five days after her birth. She was reared by Ms. Gertrude Proctor of Woodbine. Her grandfather, William Henry King, was the founder of Kingsland and served as it's first mayor. She received a physical education degree from the the University of Georgia and attended the Medical College of Georgia as a nursing student. Upon marriage to the late Dr. Clayton McDonald Massey, a local pediatrician, she had to end her nursing studies because married ladies were not allowed to continue their educational studies during this time period. "Miss Winnie" was often seen in the hospital lobby crocheting while waiting for "Pappa Doc" to finish his hospital rounds. In addition to raising five children, she was actively involved over the years as a member of First United Methodist Church through the Needle pointers and Administrative Council as well as the Booth Sunday School Class and Bereavement committee. She loved flowers and was an active member of a Garden Club, Ruth Groover's Holiday Supper Club, and the Mall Walkers.

She is survived by David (Kareen) Massey from Dover's Bluff; Paul (Anna) Massey from Tifton; Mary (Benjy) Varnell from Waycross; Martha (Hugh) McBride from Lumber City, and Joe (Kathy) Massey from Roswell, 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren, close friend "adopted daughter" Patti Reese White, and wonderful caregivers Sandy Wilson, Marie Tyler, Forestine Hawkins, Ada Robertson, and Geraldine Parnell. Words cannot express the appreciation the family has for the love and the outings in which each of these ladies allowed Miss Winnie to participate.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6-8 p.m., at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, "Food Pantry" or "LAMBS Project", 410 Williams Street, Waycross, Georgia 31501 or to Lumber City United Methodist Church, PO Box 67, Lumber City, Georgia 31549.
