Joseph H. Allen was the second of eight children born to Joseph and Jane Stafford Allen. He was the second son.

Joseph was united in marriage August 23, 1891 with Lettie A. Alexander. This union resulted in the birth of three children: Virgil Allen ( 1891- ???); Perle Allen (1892-1986); And, Reuben Stanley Allen (1895-1954).
