Joseph Walter Vance, 77, of Mansfield, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at MedCentral Mansfield. Born May 26, 1935 in Emmett, West Virginia, he was the son of George A. and Susan (Kelly) Vance.
A veteran of the United States Army, he retired as a general foreman from Empire Detroit Steel following 30 years of service. Joseph was known to many as the Credit Union Man having been an integral part of organizing the credit union at the steel mill which is known today as Directions Credit Union ~ having served as the Director for 50 years.
He was a member of the Venus Masonic Lodge, Baku Grotto, VFW 3494 and the Korean War Veterans Association. In his younger days, he loved flying Cessna planes, planting and tending to trees, flowers and vegetables and going to flea markets.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian (Boyce) Vance; a son, David W. Vance of Ashland; a granddaughter, Ren (Shawn) Hutchins; two grandsons, Joseph D. Vance and Jesse Vance; a great granddaughter, Peyton Marie Vance; a brother, Robert S. (Delorse) Vance of Texas; two sisters, Gladys (Willis) Hicks of Willard and Pamela (Richard) Egnor of West Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first born son, Richard Lee Vance.

Diamond Street, Mansfield where Masonic services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the funeral home conducted by Pastor Joseph P. Vance. Burial will follow in Windsor Park Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Council.
