Born and raised in Essex County, VA, she was one of 10 children born to the late Peter S. and Lottie Bush Young.
After marriage to the late Charles E. Hyson in 1942, she lived for seven years in Merrifield, VA, and then moved in 1949 with Charles and two young sons to a small dairy farm they bought near Gettysburg. In 1954 they moved into the town of Gettysburg, followed by a move in 1962 to a house they built in Hellam Township. She lived there until November 2005.
At that time she moved to Autumn House, an assisted living facility in York, residing there until her present illness.
She very much enjoyed the rich activity program and social life there.
Romaine was well known for her cooking, especially baking. Some other favorite pastimes included flower gardening, family travels, church activities, bingo, and watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Church memberships included Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Hustle, VA, St. Paul AME Zion Church, Gettysburg, and Bethlehem Baptist Church, York (50 years).
She worked as a private cook for many years, as well as in some housekeeping positions.
Survivors include her son, Sanford (Thomas Latus); brother, Winston Young (Brenda); another sister-in-law, Estelle Hyson; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be, March 23, 2013, at Bethlehem Baptist Church, York, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Aaron A. Willford, Jr. officiating. Viewing will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Burial will be at Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery, 1919 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, following the service.
