U.S. Congressman. He graduated from University of Alabama School of Commerce and Business Administration, in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army, in the European Theater during World War II. After the war, he graduated from University of Alabama School of Law in 1948 and was a lawyer in private practice. He was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1958-66). In 1967, he was elected as a Democrat to the Ninetieth Congress and to the next fourteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1997. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 84.
