ELLA R. MATHEWS 1921-2011

NEWCOMERSTOWN--Ella R. Mathews, 89, Newcomerstown, passed away late Sunday night, (March 13, 2011) in the Riverside Rehabilitation Center, Newcomerstown. She was born in Guernsey County on Oct. 6, 1921, daughter of the late Frank Miller Sherrard and Mary Belle Gadd Sherrard.

Mrs. Mathews was a homemaker for all her adult life and retired from the Newcomerstown School System, where she was employed for many years as a custodian. She attended Cavalry United Methodist Church, Newcomerstown, and enjoyed cooking, baking, quilting and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. "Shorty" Mathews, Newcomerstown, on Aug. 9, 1998, and whom she married on April 25, 1958. Also deceased are three brothers and two sisters, Robert Sherrard, Canton, and Wilmer Sherrard, Leonard Sherrard, Ruth Gibson, and Isabelle Armstrong, all of Cambridge.

She is survived by a daughter and a son, B. Louise Harrold Mann, Cambridge, and Ronald L. Mathews and wife Renee "Sam" Schlupp, Newcomerstown. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Chad Robert and wife Jennifer Mann, Cambridge, Robbie Shawn Mann, Port Washington, Jacob Lewis Mathews, Zanesville, Taylor Elise Mathews, Dover, Zoey Marie Mathews, Newcomerstown, and Connor Spring, Newcomerstown. She also leaves two great-grandchildren, Abby Jo Mann and Benson A. Mann, Cambridge; a step-great grandson, Michael Perkins, Cambridge; her sister, Jennie and husband Lawrence Jackson, Cambridge; a brother-in-law, James Gibson, Cambridge; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Ella will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. Burial will follow in Guernsey County Memorial Gardens, Cambridge. Visiting hours will be from noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday at the funeral. The family is requesting that memorials be made in Ella's name to the Community Hospice of Tuscarawas, Carroll, and Stark Counties, 201 W. Third St., Dover OH 44622.
