A bridge crossing the South Branch of Blacklick Creek is soon expected to memorialize a Vietnam veteran – a Nanty Glo native killed in action.
Legislation proposing the Platoon Sergeant Alfred McCullough Memorial Bridge passed the state House on Monday, according to a release from state Sen. John Wozniak’s office. The bill passed the Senate last week.
The bridge is on Route 271 (Chestnut Street) in Nanty Glo.
McCullough received a posthumous Silver Star for a May 13, 1968, reconnaissance mission during which his squadron came under fire from automatic and antitank weapons nested in a heavily fortified position, the release says.
McCullough, the acting platoon leader, directed a counterstrike that neutralized the remaining rocket fire teams in the area.
He alone destroyed six one-man defensive positions with grenades, even though he sustained wounds in the fight.
McCullough was killed in action less than a month later.
He was born in Nanty Glo in 1935 and graduated from Nanty Glo High School, now Blacklick Valley High School.
It’s unclear where the request to name the bridge originated, a spokesman for Wozniak said.
This is the legislation for th4e bridge name and has the citation: http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/LI/uconsCheck.cfm?txtType=HTM&yr=2014&sessInd=0&smthLwInd=0&act=197&chpt=0&sctn=13&subsctn=0
