Nancy Brown was born 1807-1809 in Tennessee per census records. It is believed she married Joseph Burnett about 1828 as their first child, Thomas Berry Burnett, was born in 1829 in Lawrence County, Indiana (per Thomas B.'s military enlistment record). The Burnetts moved to Franklin County, Missouri, about 1838, then to neighboring Crawford County by 1850. A homestead patent for the E 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of Section 33 in Boone Township, Crawford County, just outside Bourbon, was awarded to Nancy after her husband's death. Joseph and his wife Nancy are believed to be buried in a family cemetery on this property.

Nancy's maiden name was stated to be Brown on the death records of her daughters Mary Ann (Burnett) Russell and Elizabeth Jane (Burnett) Carroll Record. Nancy died between 1873, when she submitted the final proof for her husband's homestead patent application, and the time of the 1880 census. Descendants of at least four of her children say that per their oral family history Nancy was at least part Native American, possibly Cherokee, but this has not yet been proven by any records or by DNA testing of her descendants.

Children of Joseph and Nancy (Brown) Burnett were:
Thomas Berry Burnett m. Nancy Russell
John Henry Burnett m. Sarah (Pritchett) Enloe
Mary Ann Burnett m. Dalson/Dodson Russell
Joseph Jackson Burnett m. Sarepta Walker
Ira M. Burnett m. 1st Rachel Walker, 2nd Louisa D. Elliston
Elizabeth Jane Burnett m. 1st Willam G. Carroll, 2nd John Record
Nancy M. Burnett m. James Walker
Amanda Emily Burnett m. Washington Marion England
