Son of Michael and Anna (Shepard) Clapper.

About 1853 or 4, Richard married a lady named Carrie from Vermont, and they had four children. Richard and his wife outlived all their children.

On 21 Aug 1862 Richard mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Millbury, MA.

He was 30 years and 1 month old. On 31 Dec 1862 Richard ended military service by discharge due to disability.

He applied for a veteran's pension in Aug 1864.

After the war, Richard and his family lived in Buffalo, NY, where they were enumerated in the federal census.

On 9 Jan 1914, Richard was admitted at National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Bath, New York.

He died there on 22 Jan 1914. He was 81 years and 6 months old.
