One killed after boat slams into railroad embankment on Badin Lake

POSTED 9:40 AM, MAY 18, 2012, BY SCOTT GUSTIN, UPDATED AT 11:53AM, MAY 18, 2012

STANLY COUNTY, N.C. — A man was killed and a second man injured when their boat crashed into a railroad embankment on Badin Lake on Thursday.

Officers with NC Wildlife Resources Commission said the boat struck the embankment, ejecting the driver and a passenger.

Officials said the driver, James Mark McDowell, 48, lost control after something hit him in the eye.

They said McDowell reached up to his eye and the wheel spun quickly to the right and the boat crashed into the railroad embankment.

The passenger, Barry Simmons, 48, was ejected and run over by the boat. Simmons died on the scene, officials said.

Investigators said McDowell was not going too fast when the crash happened.

McDowell swam to shore. He was taken to Stanly Regional Medical Center with a shoulder injury.

Neighbors said the boat’s driver is not known to be reckless.

“I know that guy that drives that boat,” Greg Belk told WSOC from his home on Beach Rd, “and he don’t fly around out here.”

Wildlife officers have not said what caused the accident.
