Douglas served as a Private with the 2 Michigan Calvary Company-H. He enlisted on September 3, 1861. On July 1, 1862 he was reported missing in action at Boonville, Mississippi. His discharge came on December 13, 1862. He reenlisted on October 11, 1864 with the 3 Michigan Infantry Company-K. He later transferred to the 4 Infantry. Douglas served as a member and flag holder for the GRAND ARMY of the REPUBLIC Post-139; Department-Michigan. His discharge came on July 9, 1865 where he was in the hospital for reasons not listed.
