She was born in Alden, Minn., to William F. and Sarah Evenson Hazelton Ostrander. She moved to Albert Lea, Minn., at the age of 2 to a small farm that was bought with an inheritance from her great-grandmother, who lived in France. She received her elementary education in Albert Lea and then attended a vocational high school to learn to sew. She quit school at age 15 to work when her parents divorced. She and her mother moved to Minneapolis, where she worked as a clerk in the shoe repair department at Donaldson's Department Store.

While employed there, she met Thomas Leif AAsum, who worked in the ladies shoe department. They were married March 27, 1928, in Minneapolis. They lived in Minneapolis until moving to Fairmont, Minn., in 1935. Her husband graduated from the Minnesota Chiropractic College and established the AAsum Chiropractic Clinic. In 1948, they moved to Corvallis, where her husband opened AAsum Chiropractic Clinic on Western Avenue. His son, James, purchased his father's practice, and the couple moved to Albany to open the Albany AAsum Clinic in 1967. They moved back to Corvallis in 1972. Her husband preceded her in death in August of 1975.

She married Leo G. Vesper on Oct. 26, 1980, at Faith Lutheran Church in Albany. They made their home at Meadow Park in Corvallis. He preceded her in death in February of 1995.

She was a member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing and writing poetry for special occasions. Her family remembers her as being well-known for her cooking and always being able to come up with a meal for anyone who dropped in. She was also known for setting a table with flowers from her garden.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas R. AAsum, Jr. of Albany, and Dr. James J. AAsum of Lincoln City; daughters, Nancy V. Packer of Corvallis and Anita Jean Wylie of Springfield; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
