Evelyn was born June 18, 1921 in Clyde, North Dakota, the oldest daughter of 9 children born to Leslie and Cecelia (Graetz) Booth. She was raised and educated in Big Falls and Tenstrike. After graduating high school twice (in Blackduck and Bemidji), she went into nurse's training in Washington, DC. It was there that she fell in love and, after a 2 week courtship, married Ernest Eugene Ashley on Nov. 29, 1941 in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Over the next 20 years, she traveled from naval base to naval base with him, they had 11 children. Following Ernie's Naval retirement in 1958, they settled in Bemidji. Evelyn was a devoted mother and grandmother, raising her children with love and humor. Evelyn was also a devoted member of St. Philip's Church, serving in St. Anne's Circle and as a Eucharistic Minister. She spent many years volunteering with the hospital auxiliary, serving as its president. She especially enjoyed taking photos of newborns for their families. She loved to travel and took many BSU travel tours. One of her passions in life was playing duplicate Bridge. On any given Tuesday, you would find her at the Elk's Club playing. She acquired enough master points to become a life master. One of the highlights of her life was to play in a Bridge tournament in which Omar Sharif also played. The Family wishes to thank Dr. Howard Hoody and his staff for excellence in providing health care and the Gold Pine Home staff for their loving care over the last 8 years.
